**for a denser look try bpdc instead of bptc
Twisted Cable Straps -
Make 2 - 5" x 2" straps
ch 18***
Row 1: sc across
Row 2: (wrong side) flsc across
Row 3: blsc, across
Repeat rows 2 & 3 until work measures 2" wide. Finish off leaving a 8" tail.
***Correction made May 2011
Finishing:
Fold bottom edge on one side of hat up 2" and using tapestry needle and extra yarn secure in place with a few stitches. Making sure the strap will be laying flat and facing right side out when laying against the hat, attach the two straps side by side to bottom edge of fold with the 8" tail. (See photo below for reference) Twist the two ribbed strips together 3x making sure they are laying flat against the hat, anchor edges in place with a few stitches, then using tapestry needle and leftover yarn, secure each strap to the top of the ribbing at the base of the crown.
Finishing: Weave in all ends on hat, using tapestry needle
NOTE: If twisted cable refuses to lay flat on it's own, simply anchor the edges down with a few stitches with your tapestry needle and yarn :)

ReplyDeletesuch a cute pattern! thank you for sharing :)
ReplyDeleteWill you please clarify where it says Repeat Row 9? Did you mean to repeat row 8 or rows 7 and 8?
ReplyDeleteThHanks so much!
Oopsie! :) typo. Repeat row 8..... thanks for the catch!
ReplyDeleteTHanks so much! I am going to get right back to working on this!
ReplyDeletequite lovely ty for pattern

ReplyDeletethis just reminds me stylistically of the knit pattern on the cover of this book, though this one is very different, but has a similar feel to it of the cloche. http://www.amazon.com/Boutique-Knits-Laura-Irwin/dp/1596680733
love your designs!
This is a beautiful cloche and I've been so excited to see the final result of my work on this pattern. I have finished the hat portion of it and I am just so confused with the results so far. I'm not a novice crocheter by any means, but I consulted a tutorial just to make sure I am doing the bptc correctly and I followed it exactly. The exterior ribbing of my hat runs in a beautiful horizontal pattern similar to your pictures. But, when I flip the brim up, the interior of the hat reveals ribbing that is most definitely a very pronounced vertical rib. So, there is not that flow and continuity of pattern when the brim is flipped up...the hat is horizontally ribbed, while the brim contrasts against it with a vertical rib. I have used about 189 yards of yarn and I'm having to stop the ribbing at 7 inches long (not the indicated 9 inches). If I don't, the hat will cover my eyes down to my nose, even after the brim is rolled up (I'm measuring from the first row of ribbing to the last, not counting the top crochet in the round.) I cannot figure out what I've done wrong when I have double-checked my technique for the bptc and ended up with such different results from your pictures. When you did bptc, did you go from behind around the post and yarn over and pull through three times to make a treble crochet? That is the bptc I know and the one in an on-line tutorial. Are the posted pictures the ones of the knitted hat or the crocheted hat? I'm sorry for all the questions...I only ask because I love this cloche so much I want to make it look like your pictures!
ReplyDelete@Melissa - So the posted pictures are of the knitted version. The pattern, however is for a crocheted version of this hat. When you flip up the bottom brim of this hat in the crocheted version there will be a vertical ribbing design instead of a horizontal one. It's a slightly different look but when covered by the twisted cable, it looks almost identical.
ReplyDeleteWhen I made this hat the ribbing pattern part of the hat the length that worked best for me was 9" so this length is simply a guideline since not everyone wears the same size hat. If stopping at 7" for you fits good than that is perfect. :) No need to keep going.
The main thing that keeps this hat looking closest to the photo is to make sure that when you attach and twist together the side cable straps that they lay flat against the hat, not twist together and making them bulky.
I also made a pattern correction as far as these cable straps go, to chain 18 instead of 28. This was a typo and sadly some people are getting a cable that is far too long for the side of the hat. Hopefully you are using the updated pattern! :)
Hopefully this helps! Happy Crocheting. Feel free to comment with any additional questions!

Thanks so much, Guen. I just started on the straps tonight and decided to check back to see if there were any new corrections...perfect timing! I am so glad that I'm on the right track with my work and didn't make a mistake. I did shorten the body of the hat and it fits perfectly. I don't mind the vertical ribbing at all...I just wanted to know if I had made an error. Again, thanks for your help and for a wonderful pattern. It's truly adorable and I will be making more cloches very soon. I look forward to trying more of your wonderful patterns!
ReplyDeleteGratefully,
Melissa
Hi Guen,
ReplyDeleteThis is a lovely pattern. I have a question about the "gap" in the ribbing. In round 7 you say to: dc in each dc, around; however, the row before and after 7 are bpdc, therefore row 7 creates a gap in the ribbing. I'm confused as to why this is there. I know the picture is of the knitted version of the hat, but it doesn't look like it has a gap. Please let me know if I've done something wrong here. Thanks so much.

Thank you so much for this pattern! I've tried so hard with many hat patterns and failed, but this one has worked like a dream and looks beautiful on.
ReplyDeleteRegards,
Siân
This is a BEAUTIFUL hat! I am soooooo going to make this. Thanks for sharing :)
ReplyDeleteis there a reason you don't connect each row? my transition from row 2 to row 3 just looks like i missed a stitch... i am now confused. i've done crochet in the round, but always connecting the rows or in single crochet. please help!
ReplyDelete@April - I see what you are saying and it looks like it might have been typed wrong. To continue the ribbed look that stitch does need to be a bpdc. :)
ReplyDelete@ lrickmeyer - I'm not quite sure what exactly you are seeing when you are doing your increases. Are you referring to the lack of joins in each row? This is to give it more of a seamless look whereas joining each row tends to have a defined line of where your round have been joined. Also make sure that you have the correct number of stitches for each round. I hope this helps!
Guen
Are there photos available of the crochet version?
ReplyDeleteit took me a total of 3 days (sick one year old =[ but shes feeling better now :) ) i kinda have a big head haha but all i had to do was make the hat a little longer as the stretch is GREAT when i flipped the brim up as Melissa said there is a odd looking vertical ribbing but its cute on the whole finished product the cable straps were a bit difficult to do if like me you have a larger head i recommend chaining 25 instead of 18 and as i twisted i stitched them down heres some pics of mine (hopefully they show up :) sorry for the bad quality)

Guen!! I love this hat!! Just started a few seconds ago and Ive already hit a snag. When starting row 2 with the seamless effect, do I chain 2 or 3 to start the dc? And does this count as the first dc?
ReplyDeleteHope to hear from you soon!

ReplyDeleteI am going to have to remake this hat for my self.
ReplyDeleteNot because it came undone.
not because it was small..
Not because I did it wrong..
nope...
because it was so cute that the very day I finished it I wore it out ... someone stole it. Can you believe that? They snatched it right out of my diaper bag in the mall dining area.
- although it is months later it is just getting cold enough for a hat again lol
DeleteI'm newish to crochet so I just want to make sure I'm doing it right, but starting in round 3 at the end you say to continue around. Is that a continuation of the entire instruction or are you saying just to continue the 2dc in next dc the rest of the way around? Thanks!
ReplyDeletePOST PICTURES OF THE CROCHET VERSION. PLEASE.
ReplyDeleteMade this hat with beautiful results in homespun yarn. Would love to send a photo please let me know where at Teen.ward@gmail.com
